ABOUT THE INTLAW MOOT

ABOUT
|
Origins
The IntLaw Investment Arbitration Moot (IntLaw Moot) was established through the IntLaw Foundation by M. Belén Paoletta and Ivan Levy, Partners at IntLaw LLP, as an expression of their long-standing commitment to legal education and the development of future practitioners in public international law and international arbitration.
Values
The IntLaw Moot seeks to broaden meaningful access to the study and practice of public international law and international arbitration for students, particularly in regions where opportunities for mooting and specialized training in investment arbitration remain limited, notwithstanding the significant involvement of their States and investors in investor-State dispute settlement.
A central ambition of the IntLaw Moot is to reduce structural disparities in access to training, research tools, and professional networks while maintaining the highest standards of academic and professional rigor. Participating teams therefore receive complimentary access to leading educational and research platforms, including GAR Academy, Jus Mundi, and Investor-State LawGuide.
The IntLaw Moot is also conceived as a platform for academic and professional development extending beyond the competition itself. Many awards are accompanied by internships with arbitral institutions, scholarships and fee waivers for academic programs and professional certifications, as well as other opportunities generously offered by the IntLaw Moot’s institutional supporters. Together, these initiatives seek to foster the continued development of students, coaches, and arbitrators and to create experiences that extend beyond their participation in the IntLaw Moot.
Design
The competition is conceived as a serious academic and professional initiative and is structured to reflect the realities of investment arbitration as closely as possible. The case engages with admissibility, jurisdiction, merits, and reparations, while the overall format combines intellectual rigor with practical realism.
Advocacy Format
Teams progress through both written and oral phases. They submit memorials for claimant and respondent before pleading their cases before tribunals in simulated arbitral hearings.
Unique Features
Procedural Development | Ten days before the oral phase, a new factual development is introduced. Teams must reassess their positions, determine its legal implications, and adapt their arguments accordingly.
Award Drafting Exercise | Following the conclusion of the IntLaw Moot, applications open for three students to be selected on merit to draft a reasoned excerpt of the arbitral award. The initiative extends the experience beyond advocacy by inviting selected participants to approach the case from the perspective of the tribunal and engage directly with the process of arbitral decision-making.

Experience
The IntLaw Moot is conceived as a truly global and inclusive experience. Teams from all regions are actively encouraged to participate, with the aim of fostering a diverse and representative environment that reflects both the beauty of cross-cultural interaction as well as the international character of the competition.
The experience is designed to be demanding and rewarding. Participants are expected to engage deeply with intellectually stimulating legal questions and operate within a setting that mirrors professional standards.
At the same time, the IntLaw Moot seeks to cultivate a collegial atmosphere, where participants can build life-long connections with peers, practitioners, and academics from different legal traditions and professional backgrounds. It is not only a competitive forum, but also a space for exchange, collaboration, and professional development.
